James Monroe
James Monroe
"National honor is the national property of the highest value." quote by James Monroe

Name:
James Monroe many people also refered to him as The Last Cocked Hat and Era-of-Good-Feelings President.

Party:
Democratic-Republican

Birth:
April 28, 1758
Death:
July 4, 1831

Term:
5th President of the United States (1817-1825) first term was 1817 to 1821 second term was 1821 to 1825

Vice President:
Daniel D. Tompkins served as vice president for both terms

Rating:
Monroe was a very strong nationalist as he made two national trips visiting and staying in some places for long peroid of times and holding ceremonies of welcome and good will. I think that Monroe deserves a B as a president. Monroe then was president during the era of good feelings, served in the revolutionary war and was freinds with George Washington.

Goals:
Monroe's main goal was to push the state of nationalism that had followed the war of 1812. He tried to accomplish this by taking two national tours that he used to ensue the political Era of good feelings, which is where the political partys got along, he held welcome ceromonies and good will. Unfortuantley in 1819 little way into his first term there was the Panic of 1819. The Panic of 1819, though there wasnt much Monroe could do, was unavoidable in the opinion of Monroe but he still tried to help in the small ways that he could. Besides this panic, which ended before his second term, he did a good job of upholding the Era of Good Feelings.

Relationship with congress:
Monroe was considered the "The Era of Good Feelings president" which as stated ealier was the cooration of the two political partys. This made his terms as president very easy going. He vetoed the Cumberland Road Bill, which provided for yearly improvements to the road, because he believed it to be unconstitutional for the government to have such a large hand in what was essentially a civics bill deserving of attention on a state by state basis. The idea he had was that states pay for the road instead of the national government. He did accept The Missouri Compromise bill that resolved the struggle, pairing Missouri as a slave state with Maine, a free state, and barring slavery north and west of Missouri forever.

Most positive outcomes:
The best thing that happened during Monroes presidency was what he did at the end. The Monroe Doctrine which he delivered in his message to Congress on December 2, 1823. In it, he proclaimed the Americas should be free from future European colonization and free from European interference in sovereign countries' affairs. It further stated the United States' intention to stay neutral in European wars and wars between European powers and their colonies, but to consider any new colonies or interference with independent countries in the Americas as hostile acts toward the United States. Many other countrys believed that this was offensive as Americas lack of military power wasnt threatining to the powerhouse country such as Britain.

Worst thing done as president:
The worst thing Monroe did as president was vetoing the Cumberland Road bill as this bill wanted the government to put money into. Though he thought this to be more state oriented if this bill would of passed it would of led to an increase in inner national trade as citizens this road would provide easy transportation for merchants and farmers alike.

Future Presidency's:
Monroe definetly effected the other presidents to come mainly through the monroe doctrine as he stated the colinization time was over this protected future presidents such as Adams and Jackson from worrying about new british, french, or spanish settlements that could of comeinto there land and caused new wars or rivalrys in the America's. His accepting of Missouri and Maine made the slave trade even so that nothing would brake into civil war this close after the war of 1812.

Conclusion:
I gave Monroe a B for his presidency becuase even though nothing bad, besides the Panic of 1819 which was unavoidable, happened. Though his presidency was an easy one as ever with the era of good feelings but he vetoed the Cumberland Road Bill which should of been a government issue to fix the roads. which is why he recieved a B.
